Nordlys Cottage is a detached traditional stone cottage nestled on the edge of Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park. This was the first forest in the UK to achieve dark sky status and on clear nights it offers breathtakingly beautiful skies full of stars. Enjoy the unique experience of viewing these from a comfy king size bed or a hot bubble bath through the large Velux windows above. If you are very lucky and head out into the dark park, you could catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

THE COTTAGE

Our cottage sleeps up to 6 people in 3 bedrooms. There are 1 king and 1 twin bedroom upstairs and a further double bedroom downstairs. The main bathroom is upstairs with a walk in shower and luxurious free standing bath. The master bedroom has an ensuite with shower and w/c. The fully equipped kitchen has an electric hob, oven, microwave, full size fridge freezer, full size dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. There is a large dining table with seating for 6. The cosy living room has a comfortable corner sofa and a large spinning chair, which allows you to sit taking in the front open aspect views. There is also a gas log burner effect fire giving you the cosy feel of a log burner without the hassle. There is a substantial garden which can be enjoyed from the large patio doors in the living room, the rear conservatory, or sat out on the garden furniture. The garden is split level with some steep steps but the elevated position provides stunning views.

Getting around

Neighbourhood

We are located in the quiet hamlet of Blackcraig which backs on to Kirroughtree Forest Park. It is walking distance to Kirroughtree's 2 lochs, pet friendly visitor centre cafe, bike hire and 7 Stanes mountain bike trails. We are also in close proximity to the town of Newton Stewart which has all the necessary amenities and more.

THE AREA

Galloway Forest park is the largest forest in the UK with an abundance of wildlife, walking trails and outdoor pursuits to enjoy. If that wasn't enough, we are close to the South West Scotland coast, also known as the Scottish Riviera, with it's long sandy beaches and rugged coastlines. After a long day of exploring the picturesque surroundings, retire to our cosy cottage where you can relax in front of the fire or sit in the garden and watch the sunset.

What our guests are saying

Honestly one of the nicest Airbnb's I've stayed in - would 100% recommend booking.
The cottage itself is gorgeous with everything you could possibly need for a week away, comfy beds, fully equipped kitchen (even an air fryer) and lovely peaceful garden/surroundings. I felt right at home and did not want to leave!
It's in a great area with lots to do, whether you like sight seeing, hiking or days at the beach.
I will definitely be looking to book here again in the future!

A wonderful few days with friends & our dog 🐶
The cottage was so comfortable & welcoming, decorated & furnished to a very high standard with the most comfortable beds too!
Great location for exploring the local area. Lots of mountains to climb & stunning forests to explore.
Dog friendly, we especially loved the dog welcome pack, thank you!
Melissa was a very welcoming host & went above & beyond with her communication, particularly regarding the possible sighting of the northern lights which we did manage to see! Looking forward to a return visit to explore the area some more 😊
